Vladimir Stozharov is best known for atmospheric landscapes painted on his travels in the far north of Russia in the 1950's and 1960's before his tragic and premature death. However, he also painted a few accomplished still lives and figures in interiors of which this picture is a good example. This picture belongs to the Tretyakov Gallery and is kept in the basement. The Tretyakov only has room to display around a 10th of its paintings and sculpture collection at any one time so a trip to explore the holdings in the basement is always a valuable experience.
