Frieze London 2013 rolls into town
Oct 16th, 2013 | By Ivan Lindsay | Category: JournalIt’s that time of year again and London’s Frieze week starts today with numerous dealer shows , auctions and fairs selling a potential record US$2bn of artworks. The Frieze Art Fair opens tomorrow for VIP guests in a purpose built structure designed by architects Carmody Groake in Regents Park. Gagosian will be showing five works by the banal, vacuous, kitsch and ever popular Jeff Koons including Sacred Heart (Blue Magenta) (1994 – 2007).
Frieze Masters, a sister event, also opens with 130 dealers showing a contrasting range of historic and modern works. An inaugural fair of contemporary African Art starts at Somerset House and the Pavilion of Art + Design opens in Berkeley Square. Christie’s, Sotheby’s, and Phillips will be offering 900 works of postwar and contemporary art valued at US$245m.
With Old Master specialists like Johnny Van Haeften at Frieze Masters, Contemporary Art at Frieze and the auction rooms and African Art at Somerset House there is a cross section of art available that will interest most people and it is not surprising that the Frieze week has become so popular with collectors, dealers and curators. Frieze week runs until this Saturday (19th October) when the fair closes at 7pm.
